Syncrohearts Special Fundraiser for Rumana Monzur2011-07-25 Syncrohearts Special Fundraiser for Rumana Monzur A Tragic Story - A Woman loses her sight - the world gains vision Help Rumana and help end violence against women... On June 5th, Ms. Rumana Monzur was severely beaten in an attack by her husband in her home city of Dhaka, Bangladesh while on a break from her Masters studies in Political Science at UBC. Her injuries have left her without sight. Her husband pulled his wife’s hair, throwing her to the bed and pinning her arms down with his legs, she says. Then, in an account that is bone-chilling, she says her husband pressed his fingers into her eyes, gouging them out. According to Monzur, he gnawed at her cheek, lips, and nose, biting off bits of flesh, blood spilling throughout the room as Monzur flailed. Her daughter, Anusheh, stood in a corner of the room, screaming, as two household servants struggled to open the locked door. A neighbor took her to the hospital, where her parents soon arrived. The diagnosis: blindness. “I lost my eyes,” says Monzur. “I don’t want anyone to suffer like I am suffering. It is horrible.” When it became evident that Ms. Monzur might benefit from further medical care in Canada, UBC actively supported efforts to bring her to Vancouver. Ms. Monzur arrived in Canada on July 5, and began medical treatment immediately. Further procedures will be required to determine how much, if any, of her sight can be restored.
After three recent surgeries, there is not much hope that Rumana will regain any of her sight. Unfortunately, she will probably live the rest of her life in darkness. Hopefully her tragic story will bring vision to the world and help end violence against women. “To everyone who has been thinking of me or praying for me – thank you for your support and goodwill,” said Monzur.
